Nous habitons proche du centre-ville, à proximité de tous les services dont la seule pizzéria de la ville!  Je dois vous avouer qu’elle n’est pas donnée ici, mais qu’elle est excellente!  Notre boulagerie a une réserve limitée de produits, pour la plupart sucrée.  Un peu plus loin au nord, nous avons un centre d’internet, d’interrurbains, des magasins diverses (dans le style d’un Canadian Tires, mais à une échelle 10 fois moins grande), le seul supermarché de la ville et beaucoup de fruiteries avec une variété très limitée de fruits et légumes.

On a eu droit à un premier repas nicaragüense où j’ai décidé d’essayer du mouton.  Étonnamment, je n’en ai plus revu depuis qu’on a quitté la capital.  C’est une grande ville, comme toute grande ville d’Amérique latine avec de grands carrefours, de gros arbres un peu partout, mais aussi des espèces de bidonville poussant sur le bord de l’eau, dans des endroits facilement vulnérables aux humeurs de la météo dont les inondations.

Dès le lendemain, nous sommes partis pour Esteli où Léna, Lazar (mes deux compagnons de fortune à Somoto ) et moi avons passé une nuit.  C’est une petite grande ville, aux allures de villages aux concentrés de commerces.  De jeunes enfants nous ont quêté de l’argent à notre sortie d’un marché.  Notre coopérante, Véronique, nous a averti que c’est préférable de leur donner de la nourriture au lieu d’argent, puisque ça allait directement à eux et ils peuvent se rassasier un peu.

Dès le lendemain, nous sommes repartis sur la route vers notre destination finale, Somoto.  Sonia, qui est en poste à Esteli, nous a accompagné et en a profité pour visiter les environs.

Nos journées sont relativement courtes, mais elles commencent tôt.  Le soleil se lève vers 7heures puis se couchent autour de 18h30.  Les gens sont ultra matinaux, ils sont debout dès 5heures et beaucoup font du jogging autour du parc.  Et j’ai découvert que c’est faux, les coqs ne chantent pas aux petites heures du matin, ils chantent à toute heure de la journée, notamment à 3heures du matin!

Je rentrerai plus dans les détails quant à notre maison ici à Somoto, le mode de vie et autres choses dans le prochain blogue.  Il se fait tard maintenant et je dois me lever tôt.

Je voulais simplement coucher quelques réfléxions sur le Nicaragua ici.  Plus le temps passse, moins j’anticipe mon départ, mais j’ai aussi très hâte.

Qu’est-ce qui me retient ici?  J’avais prévu rester en ville pour un an, mais le destin a voulu que je quitte non seulement la ville, mais aussi le pays pour 5 mois.  C’est un peu de ma faute, puisque j’ai postulé et passé les entrevues!

Mais j’ai hâte d’explorer cette nouvelle contrée.  Ça justifierait en partie mes études en relations internationales/coopération internationale et les nombreux cours d’espagnol suivis!  Enfin quelque chose qui a rapport avec mes études et mon expérience en comm.

J’ai lu sur le site voyage.gc.ca qu’entre juin et novembre, c’est la saison des ouragans.  Étrangement, ça ne me laisse ni chaud, ni froid.  Pas plus que les volcans.  Il semblerait que ce soit le pays en Amérique du Sud qui possède le taux de criminalité le moins élevé.  Est-ce que ça ressemblerait à l’Équateur?  À voir.

Je serai à Somotho, dans le centre-nord du pays, pas loin de la frontière du Honduras.  C’est drôle, une amie y serait aussi, mais au mois de décembre et à proximité à Esteli.

Although it has been really cold lately (average temperature reaching -25 with windchill), it has been really sunny and bright.  It makes me wonder if, from above, the person who left hoped to brighten our days.  He is free of suffering now, in a better place.  It is strange when someone leaves you forever.  So far, the simple thought that we will no longer see him around, hear him or talk to him seems odd.  We still feel his presence, although he is gone.

Arrive l’étape décisive, le coeur n’en peut plus, l’oxygène commence à manquer.  Il n’y a plus de temps à perdre, il faut l’aider à respirer artificiellement, sinon il ne s’en sortira pas.  Les soins intensifs sont débordés.  Les médecins également.  Il faut une civière, on cherche une civière.  On attend, encore et toujours.  Va-t-il tenir le coup…  Finalement, une chambre se libère, l’équipe médical est prêt à le transférer.

Ce scénario, ce n’est pas exagéré.  Je dirai que ce n’est qu’un résumé simplifié.  L’angoisse pour la famille est grande.  L’équipe médicale reste calme, malgré les commentaires de quelques spécialistes…  “Il faut y aller maintenant”  “Il ne pourrait plus tenir longtemps” “On devrait rappeler le docteur X pour qu’il se dépêche, mais il est débordé ailleurs” “La machine ne donne pas de sérum assez rapidement, il faut y aller manuellement”.

Pour un début d’année 2011, l’année commence sous le signe du stress.  Le patient est finalement admis aux soins intensifs.  Il est plongé dans un coma artificiel, branché sur une machine, des tubes sortant de partout.  S’en tirera-t-il?  Seul l’avenir le dira.  Mais il y a toujours de l’espoir.

Est-ce humain de souffrir autant, ou de faire souffrir quelqu’un autant afin de le maintenir à vie plus longtemps.  Pour reprendre l’expression du docteur:  “Sa vie est déjà hypothèquée”.  Une expression horrible à entendre et à prononcer.

C’est une histoire peu ordinaire, pourtant elle peut aussi être ordinaire dans une salle d’urgence, un hôpital.  Il y a un manque de lits, il y a pénurie de médecins de tout genre.  On fait ce qu’on peut avec ce qu’on a, m’a dit un médecin.

Une lueur d’espoir malgré tout, on s’accroche à ce qu’on a, en espérant le meilleur…

It's been a while since I've last written a blog for TIG.  So many things have changed and for the better!  

This Saturday, it'll be Christmas.  What is Christmas, what does Christmas means nowadays?  It seems that more and more people are working during the Holidays Seasons.  I have friends that are far from home and won't have time to come home and celebrate with their families.  This is a bit sad when we think that Christmas use to mean family gathering.  

This Christmas, some friends and I are going to do something special.  We are going carolling on the streets to just spread some joy around.  We do it only to cheer up the atmosphere.  It's such a great idea, or I think it is.  I've always wanted to do something different and here was my chance.  My friend came up with this idea and I just love it.  

It doesn't require a lot of preps, it's fun and we get to see friends and might bring out a few smiles on people's faces.  I'm looking forward to it.

I’m starting to understand better how WordPress works!  This is a 500 pieces puzzle I started three days ago.  Yes, it took me three days to finish it, but it was a lot of fun.  We had our first snowstorm not too long ago.  I’ve taken a picture that I’ll post later.  I hope that we’ll have a white Christmas as it’s been raining for the past two days and the snow is slowly melting away.

I decided that I wanted to give it a try and learn to play guitar… It turns out harder than expected, starting by the size of the guitar. It feels awkward to hold such a huge thing and then, to curve the fingers in some unusual positions… I guess piano would have been a better idea, but I have no idea where to put it, although I did enjoy learning to play a bit of it.
